The Girl With All The Gifts | Book Review
I've always been a bit of a bookworm and I still really enjoy getting sucked into the story that develops before you on the pages...but lately I've just not had the time and I kept starting books but never finishing them. Again, life got in the way of me doing things I really enjoy. The last few months have been difficult so I'm trying to get 'me' back and two weeks holiday from work is definitely a good place to start.
The Girl With All The Gifts by M.R. Carey (£7.99) is an unexpected thriller that pulls at your heart strings and completely grabs hold of you. I managed to read it in about 24 hours - its a pretty decent sized book so you can imagine haha! I had bought this a few months back and had read the first few chapters and then forgot all about it. I wish I had finished it before now as it is easily one of the best books I've read in a while.
I won't pack this review full with spoilers but I'll try and give you a taste of what the books about. It is based around one young girl who is in some sort of unit, you're not sure why or what she has done but everyone around her seems to be extremely conscious of her and the other children within the unit. She is strapped to a wheelchair, day after day, unable to move. The story expands into a tense adventure that tests everyone's limits and pushes them to their boundaries. Relationships are created and hearts are broken (in more ways than one) and the atmosphere created is haunting but extremely intriguing and in the end intensely heart warming.
I loved how the book sent chills down my spine but in the next chapter made me smile. The complete contrast between the themes in the book is what makes it so addictive. I would honestly recommend this book to anyone. It is definitely a must-read book.
