Berlin Trip | Day Four
We found this super cute cafe just along from our hotel for breakfast. Every morning we would walk past it and I always said how nice it looked but since we finally got really decent weather we were able to sit outside and eat our breakfast. I got a croissant (which was still warm) and a blood orange juice, Cammie got a croissant too and a yoghurt pot with apricot and peach in it. Overall it was a lovely little start to the day, croissants are one of my all time favourite things so I was really pleased!
We were on a mission to find the Berlin wall and we found it eventually but came across this on our travels. It was the start of the American Sector, they had a replica checkpoint and some German men dressed as American soldiers. Of course I couldn't walk past without getting my photo taken, I mean who could right?! It did cost a couple euros but whats the point in going all the way there and not having the souvenir to prove it?
So we found the Berlin wall!! A lot of the graffiti wasn't visible anymore but you could still work out some of it. There was an exhibition on one side of the wall, it went through the war and also the times leading up to and after the war. It was really interesting and certainly something I would recommend to others going to Berlin. I mean I'm not a big history fan but World War history always seems more interesting. I took quite a few photos but I don't want to spoil it all haha!
Sections of the Berlin Wall are also dotted around the city. I think a lot of them have had new art put over the top of the original and in some case the original graffiti has been covered by tourists chewing-gum. I honestly thought that was 1. disgusting and 2. quite sad - it was a part of history (you can see it in photo one). There was also just random bits of graffiti dotted about the city, some of it was really good!
I found a crepe stall and even though I was still full from breakfast I just couldn't say no. Nutella and banana - yes please! I've seriously never tasted anything so good. It was still warm as it was made right there in front of us and I most definitely enjoyed it haha!!
After our crepes we went a walk and I had been really keen to walk through the Tiergarten - basically a massive park within Berlin! In the centre was the Victory Column, which you can see in the photos. It took us ages to walk through it to actually get where we wanted to be but it was totally worth it. Seriously so so pretty!! Accidentally we stumbled across a nudist part of the park and honestly I've never been so mortified in my life, I giggled and just couldn't help but laugh. I felt like a 12 year old school girl hahaha.
Once we go through the nudist part (cringe) we found this really cute river. People had started putting padlocks on it and I kind of wished we had one but hindsight is a wonderful thing! Still really lovely to read all these names and it was just perfect!
One of the best moments of the whole trip was by far finding a Wok to Walk. Last year in Amsterdam we found this chain and I fell in love. Being a big fan of Chinese food, I was absolutely beside myself that I could actually create exactly what I wanted!! Now, after I got home I found that there is a few in the UK - but they are based in England and I live in Scotland - you see my problem? So when we found this place I was determined that we would go before we headed home and it was amazing. 100 times better than my brain had remembered and I swear I could live on the noodles.
We done a little bit more shopping where I ended up buying the best pair of vans I've ever seen and spending a fortune in Pull & Bear - again I found that there are a few in London since I've gotten home.
We'd both been given some money from family members before we left to "go get an ice cream" - so we did. Haagen-Dasz had way more flavours there than we do in the UK which was extremely exciting!! I got blueberries and cream, it had tiny little bits of blueberries through it and it tasted like heaven. Cammie got strawberries and creme and something else which I can't remember haha! He is a MASSIVE ice cream fan.
Yeah....we totally thought we had had enough food for the day but then we remembered Vapiano! Oh dear, we decided we had to go back. It was our last night there and it just had to happen. Neither of us couldn't finish it but it was still amazing. I got spaghetti carbonara (all time favourite) this time and Cammie got a sweet pepper thing. My carbonara was the best I've ever tasted. The chef put chillies through it and it removed the boring side of carbonara. The downside to having it was that now that I've home, it is all I want to eat. Again, massive issue because I live in Scotland and my pasta is in Berlin. HELP!
One really annoying thing about being on holiday just as a couple is that unless you ask a complete stranger to take a photo of you both (on your brand new and expensive camera might I add) - which I'm too paranoid to do - it leaves you with loads of photos on your own. So in the end I settled for a good old traditional selfie. Obviously most of them were horrendous but I actually really like this one. It's my laptop desktop picture :)
There is one more day to go, it will be a much shorter post as we were only in Berlin for the morning before we had to get back to the airport...I'll try and put it up this week if I've got time.
